Minutes before making my latest workout video, I asked the videographer, “Should I wear a sports bra, or is that too risky?” His reply, “If you want clicks, wear one.” Minutes before making my latest workout video, I asked the videographer, “Should I wear a sports bra, or is that too risky?” His reply, “If you want clicks, wear one.”
I went into the restroom and stood there for a few minutes. Why should this be such a hard decision? I was concerned about the video negatively impacting me. I thought it was risky because I teach at a college and many of my students follow me online. I thought it was risky because I’m turning 40 next month and I don’t want to be looked at as a woman not “acting her age.” If you saw the video, I’m wearing the sports bra. Instead of focusing on the negative impact, I thought about the positive. I workout in a sports bra and feel confident wearing one. I’m not confident because of the size of my clothes or the amount of fat on my body. I’m confident because my body is strong, injury free and allows me to work in a career in which I can help others build up their confidence. A strong body helps me maintain focus and clarity in my job, something I hope my students witness and replicate. Health is the most valuable asset in my “life” bank account. It’s yours too. When you exercise regularly, eat clean, and manage your stress, your body works for you, not against you. The dividends are endless. In the grand scheme of things, the sports bra really doesn’t matter. What does matter is the content of the videos, blogs and workouts that I create for you. And of course, what you actually DO with that content! As I continue to produce more, I promise to keep things real and to educate you on how vital your body is to your physical, mental, emotional and financial health. These are four major areas in your life, all of which are deeply inter-related. If you want to improve any or all of them, start analyzing your body. By analyzing your body, I DO NOT mean, ‘stand naked in front of a mirror and start grabbing fat and criticizing yourself’. PLEASE don’t do that! Instead, sit down and make a chart with four columns, one for each health components (physical, mental, emotional and financial). Write down ways that your body is helping to build up your life bank account as well as ways that it’s depleting it. Your findings will sharpen your focus and improve your habits. And if you want, do it in a sports bra.
